Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, after Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

A loss will extend England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
